Great day at the beach, Manta Ray agrees.
Sun 25th Feb '07
We went to the beach at Angourie yesterday. Tracy's friend Lisa came too (it was her birthday) and we had a great time. Dylan spent all day in the waves, and Isi spent all day in the sand. While Dylan and I were out in about waist deep water (my waist) a Manta Ray (Either a baby manta or possibly a smaller variety, it was about 1 metre across) approached us for a look. It was quite amazing. I saw a shadow approaching at a great rate of knots and immediately hoisted Dylan up onto my shoulder to protect him. Almost immediately the shadow was upon us and I could see it was a ray. As soon as I saw the diamond shape I relaxed (even though I knew a sting ray would not have harmed us) because the manta's are harmless, even friendly. The ray flipped one wing up and turned more than 90 degrees when it got to about 6 feet away and it headed over towards some other swimmers. I alerted the swimmers, telling them to have a look for it and they saw it too, however it didnt hang around and we'd lost it almost as fast as it showed up. Still, it was very exciting for Dylan and I. Dylan has done up a page about the manta ray we saw on the computer which he will take to school for news.
Also, we went and had a look at mum's house taking shape, the frame is up and the windows are in.
