Politics. Climate Change. Who can we trust?
Wed 14th Nov '07
I am tiring (like most people) of the election. Thank heavens the other subject I am tiring of, climate change, isn't the election issue I feared it would be, otherwise I'd have gone mad.
I can't begin to trust most of what I hear about the election. Promises made in election years have a habit of leaving me disappointed, and I dont think most of what I've heard has been anything but schoolyard accusations and namecalling anyway. How the hell is an Australian meant to vote? Our electoral system is just another popularity contest, where the most promising and deserving contestants dont get voted in no matter what. It's the whole Xavier Sullivan for school captain all over again.
I'm also annoyed that I cant get straight answers on climate change. There's so much politics and business interfering in the science, it's so hard to tell where the politics ends and the science begins. I can't decide if global warming is the result of Man because thats the message I'm hearing from polititians and businesses who stand to gain from it. I just dont believe what I hear from people in that position. It doesn't mean that they are wrong, but I have to hear it from someone who stands to lose from that opinion before I can give it any credibility, and frankly, I just cant find them. Everyone's peddling the view that helps them and I'm sick of it, this is a issue which needs to be dealt with honestly, and pollies and business are just not capable of this - not because of dishonest people as such, but because they cannot see a clear view from their position, I cannot see how it's possible. It's like having the sponsors referreeing the game. It's not that I don't agree we should look after the environment, I certainly do, regardless of the truth about climate change. I dont want to pollute waterways, I dont want to pollute the air. But not because of fear of climate change that is out of my control. If it is in my control, I need to know. But thanks to pollies and business, I'll never ever know the truth. Nor will anyone else who learns it from the media, or any source touched by politics - and those fingers are in every pie. It's enough to make one just give up.
So I don't know who to vote for, and I dont know if I should be shutting off my computer when not in use. And I'm cranky about it!
