Transferring files with FAST
Mon 14th Jan '08
Just a quick mention to anyone thinking of using the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard (FASTWIZ) to move files and settings from one PC to another in Windows XP.
The FASTWIZ is located in Windows XP under programs > accessories > system tools > files and settings transfer wizard
I highly recommend using it to relocate data from one PC to another, however it can be a temperamental thing, like all MS software. One of the complaints I often get is that the export worked fine, but after formatting and installing Windows XP again, the import wizard says that there is no data to import. This happens when the XP CD used for the new installation isnt the same as the one used originally. If you have already formatted your hard drive when you realise this, you are in a lot of trouble!
Tip: DO NOT use the transfer wizard that is installed in your old computer!
REPEAT: DO NOT use the files and settings transfer wizard that is installed on your OLD PC!
While it CAN work, it relies on your NEW PC having the EXACT SAME version of the wizard. It may not have, because Windows XP has changed over the years and different versions (service packs etc) have different versions of the wizard. If you use one version to export, then format your hard drive, you WILL NOT GET THE DATA BACK using another version of the wizard.
ALWAYS use the version supplied on the new computer. If you have your new computer's installation CD (for windows XP) just use the new PC's CD in the old PC. Insert the CD in the old PC and open the CD, choose 'perform additional tasks' and use the wizard in there. If you do not have the XP install cd, run the wizard on the NEW PC and there is an option to make a 'Wizard disk' which you can use on your old PC.
By using the wizard from the new PC you will not run into any problems with it not recognising your exported data when it comes time to import!
